We are excited to have had a visit from MK’s very own beauty geek. Check out what she had to say below and her blog for more beauty geekiness!

Of all the treatments I’ve had, Wrinkle Relaxers are by far the most controversial. I’m open about the fact I’ve had Wrinkle Relaxers on a couple of occasions – I see no reason not to be. People’s reactions tend to be quite extreme, either pro and wanting to find out more, or very anti. In this post I’m going to answer some of the questions I get asked about Wrinkle Relaxers and share my experience of having it.

But it’s poison! Wrinkle Relaxers are a toxin, that much is true. However, it’s original use was not cosmetic but medical for spasms and dystonias. If it’s safe enough for medical use that’s enough to reassure me.

But I heard the whole side of your face can be paralysed! Side effects are highly unlikely but if they do occur they are temporary and are only experienced in the area that was treated. As with any treatment, do your research and choose someone who is qualified and recommended.

But you don’t even need Wrinkle Relaxers, you haven’t got any wrinkles! Hmmm, debatable:-) Although Wrinkle Relaxers does help existing wrinkles and lines in your face to soften, because it relaxes the muscles it also helps to prevent wrinkles in the first place.

But you’ll have a frozen face! When Wrinkle Relaxers are done properly it’s hard for people to tell you’ve had it done. As with anything in the beauty industry, there are some amateurs but if you get an experienced doctor they will be very careful to maintain a natural appearance and still allow plenty of facial movement.

I chose to use Dr Mansoor Ahmed of Harley Street, who regularly holds clinics within my local aesthetic clinic, Bodilight in Milton Keynes. I have seen Dr Ahmed’s work on a number of people I know and I like the natural look he achieves. The fact that Bodilight use Dr Ahmed also reassured me, as having used Bodilight for a number of treatments before I know they only use the best in the industry. Despite this, I still feel slightly nervous as I arrive – particularly because I’m not the biggest fan of needles.

My treatment starts with a very comprehensive consultation by a Bodilight member of staff as to what Wrinkle Relaxers are, its uses and side effects. I find it reassuring that the consultation explains everything honestly rather than being a sales pitch, and I’m given the chance to ask any questions I have.

I then meet Dr Ahmed and explain what I see as being my problem areas – predominantly a vertical crease between my eyebrows (an area called the glabella) and a horizontal crease in the middle of my forehead. Dr Ahmed asks me to frown so he can assess my individual facial expressions. This is key to offering a bespoke look rather than a one-size-fits-all ‘frozen’ look. Dr Ahmed immediately puts me at ease, he is friendly, calm and clearly knows what he is doing!

After that, I lie back and wait for the injections to start. They are less painful than I expected, a little sharp scratch as the needle enters, which immediately disappears as the Wrinkle Relaxers are injected. There are more injections than I anticipated – lots of little ones whereas I think I expected just a couple of bigger injections. In less than ten minutes, I’m all finished.

Dr Ahmed explains that I can cleanse, moisturise and put make-up on my face as normal but that I should stay upright and avoid touching the area for the next few hours. When I look in the mirror I’m expecting big injection marks, bruising and blood…what I actually see are the teeniest red marks which are only noticeable if you know exactly where to look. In fact, I looked so ‘normal’ that I did my food shopping straight after with no strange looks from other shoppers.

Wrinkle Relaxers - Immediately After

Immediately after my Wrinkle Relaxers – you can see a couple of tiny red pin prick marks if you look closely

What most people don’t realise is that Wrinkle Relaxers does not take effect immediately but can take anywhere between 1-14 days. I start to notice some difference with the horizontal forehead line after two days, with the full effects in place for both areas within 14 days. The results are exactly what I’d hoped for. My skin looks much smoother and my existing lines are now barely noticeable. I have enough movement left in my forehead to do a very slight frown and can still raise my eyebrows – just not quite as much as before. The only side effect I experience is a faint dull headache which lasts for about two days but isn’t severe enough to stop me going about my day to day life as normal.

Wrinkle Relaxers usually lasts for about four months and there is no doubt that if I could afford to I would have it done twice a year. Personally, I think it is a really good alternative to more extreme measures for dealing with lines, such as going under the scalpel. However, at £259 for the two areas I had Wrinkle Relaxers in it is more of a treat for me than a regular treatment.

If you are considering having Wrinkle Relaxers, my top tips would be:

  • Think it through carefully first – all treatments come with risks
  • Get recommendations for a suitable Doctor from other people and see the results of their work before you make a decision
  • Check your Doctor’s qualifications and experience
  • If you don’t have a free, no obligation consultation or are put under any pressure to go ahead with the treatment then walk away!

If you are local to Milton Keynes and wish to use Dr Ahmed, you can find all the details to contact Bodilight on their website https://www.bodilight.co.uk.
