Wrinkles and facial lines are most commonly caused by aging, but there are also additional factors also playing their part, such as gravity, sun damage and are even your genes. Constant facial expressions cause frown lines on your forehead to crow’s feet around your eyes.
These are all completely normal, however, that doesn’t mean you have to live with them! Wrinkle relaxers, such as Botox, can be used to smooth out and plump the different areas of your face you want to restore to their former glory.
How do wrinkle relaxers work?
Wrinkle relaxers are a prescription medication that are injected directly into the muscles, using a fine needle. They work by temporarily paralysing the muscles that are causing the wrinkling, and although they do not stop the aging process, they are a great option for those of us who are unhappy with the wrinkles in our faces.
What areas can wrinkle relaxers treat?
The most common treatment areas are
- Forehead or frown lines
- Moderate to severe crow’s feet, fine lines around the eyes
- Lip lines
- Bunny lines, the fine wrinkles that appear when scrunching your nose
They can also be used for
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
Sweating is a natural part of your body cooling down, however, excessive sweating can be the cause of great embarrassment and unhappiness. Wrinkle relaxers can be injected directly into the muscles in the armpits, paralysing the sweat glands.
- Jawline slimming
Wrinkle relaxers can be directly injected into the masseter muscle around the jaw to relax it and, therefore, giving your jaw a slimmer appearance.
You do not need to do much in the way of preparing for your wrinkle relaxers but there are some steps you can take in order to reduce potential bruising from occurring.
Approximately 2 weeks prior to treatment, supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E, should be avoided. These work by thinning the blood and therefore can contribute to more bruising after your procedure has been carried out. Aspirin and ibuprofen should also be avoided for the same reason. (Please seek medical advice before stopping any prescribed medication.)
What happens during treatment?
After an initial consultation you will have decided upon which area, or areas, you would like to treat.
It is important to remember that wrinkle relaxers are not administered with a single injection. Instead, you will be injected several times around the area, allowing the wrinkle relaxer to be administered evenly.
You will be asked to make different expressions in order for the wrinkle relaxers to be injected in the perfect spots. This procedure is not pain free, however the pain is manageable and durable. Each injection will feel like a small sting or pinch and ice can be used to help minimise the discomfort you feel.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately after your treatment, although the sites of the injection may be slightly red or swollen for a few hours, you will able to resume with your normal daily routine. You can use your usual skincare products, apply make-up and even return to work. You may also notice bruising, which can last for up to 2 weeks.
It is advised that you do not lie down, or bend for up to 4 hours following your treatment. You should also avoid rubbing or massaging the areas that have been injected. These could all result in the wrinkle filler moving, or pooling in one place…not the smooth look that you are going for.
You may feel like there has been no change to your wrinkles directly after your treatment. This is completely normal as results can take up to 2 weeks to fully develop, however, you should start to see some differences after a few days.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, the effects of a wrinkle relaxer will last for around 3-4 months but it is important to remember that results vary from patient to patient.
If you decide upon using wrinkle relaxers regularly then you may find that you will need fewer treatments as time progresses.
Although wrinkle relaxers are only a temporary solution to a permanent change in your skin, they are fantastic at smoothing the lines and wrinkles that happen to us all. With the lack of recovery time and the speed of the treatment, it is very clear to see why they are fast becoming one of the most sought after cosmetic procedures.
